Here and now

In a sense, this ever-present flowing of experience can never be completely and exhaustively explained. It simply and primordially is. Each one of us is effortlessly born into it. Each morning we wake to it. Wherever we look . . . there it is and even the looking itself, is what it is. What is changing, through time and evolving culture, are the structurally determined generative mechanisms that we are willing and able to accept as explanations for this mystery. Through explanation we birth worlds."

Here's another thought:

All of the "here and now" that we experience is from a three-pound lump of jelly permanently encased and tightly sealed in a container made of heavy of bone. It never has direct access to anything. It must infer what's here and now from second-hand signals.

Heh, yes. I often think of life as like being in a windowless submarine. We can cruise the oceans, interact in all sorts of ways, and peer at our instruments to infer what might be happening outside. But they are just instruments, and we will never actually get wet or hold a fish or see a giant squid directly for ourselves.
