Improptu Hangout was created by Tom Otvos
Does anyone want to hangout tonight, or on one of the next several evenings (North America). Totally impromptu, topic depending on participants but, ideally, practice-related. I am wide open for time, due to my single-ness and ankle broken-ness this week.

So let me propose 9pm Eastern August 20 (tonight). If there is momentum for another time, I am cool with that because I have *nothing* to do but meditate.

Could we possibly do 8:00 EST?

Fine by me. Since I cannot change the event time, I need to make a new one but before I do, I want to ensure there are not other offered times. If you like Andy's time, then please just "Thank" his post (or this one). If you want a different time, then post it and see who thanks you.

I have scheduled the Hangout for 8 and have sent out invitations. I will check back later (before it starts) and send additional invitations to whoever else is interested.

Longest hangout ever?
It was really fun. I appreciate everyone's unique perspective and experience of this thing we call the path.

Bummer! I finally got my browser working at 7:30 but it looked like it was finished (maybe just because I didn't log on in time.) Oh well...

The Hang out was awesome and really a tail-wind for my practice.
These were notes taken while in a Google Hang Out session with Tom, James, Nadav, and Andy. I just wrote down what came up for me which I wanted to learn/remember from the session. (No editing or elaboration done, just my own notes copied and pasted):
humility is so important. I try to remind myself that there is a lot that I don't know and that I don't need to know it all and that ignorance/agnosticism is frequently the right posture to take.
Volition is not totally real. We aren't in control
one's own assessments make little difference. They are thoughts
Generate/recreate the problems of daily life during the formal sits and process it. Let it be seen and then ask how it is felt in the body, etc.
There is aversion in doubt, aversion to not knowing.
"what does this thought/feeling feel like in the body?"
And "who feels this?"
nothing that you can feel, see, know, hear is you, or is "it".
do some samatha to make the resolving power of the insight practice stronger.
notice the gone/the passing away objects a la Shinzen style.
observe the one object and then let the next object pull you out of the first, noticing the change/passing away. Ride the wave of experience.
What am I thinking right now? Is it useful or not, wholesome or not?
see how it sits, see how it smells
there is embarrassment, there is walking
these are different lenses.
try to put your finger on it, you can't put your finger on anything, really.
If you notice it, it's not that.
What knows these sensations? when I investigate these more and more, they get more and more disembodied.
the self is a privileging of certain sensations over others.
I got the more Sampajana focus out of the hang out. I am more motivated to engage in the clear comprehension of the objects of mindfulness.

Great notes. That's an interesting one in particular, I think.

Count me in for future hangouts... especially now that I seem to have gotten my computer to work!

Having set up hangouts in the past, I'd say it seems more effective to do them on short notice (tonight!) than to plan them several weeks ahead. Though perhaps that was sheer chance.
