Hey guys - aren't there two different books written by women who had sudden awakenings without a practice context? One possibly a neuroscientist who had a stroke, the other a woman who stepped off a bus? I at first was confusing the two stories, but now I'm pretty sure it's two different stories. One of them does TED talks, too, right? Anyone remember names and titles?

Segal was hardly without "a practice context," however: she had done extensive meditation in the Transcendental Meditation system. At one point I read a book by Len or Les Somebody who did the early research on "spiritual emergencies" and a high proportion of the cases were TMers who got more than they expected by way of experience, and less support from the organization than they deserved.

There's this blog that seems to aggregate info on the subject: spiritualemergency.blogspot.com/

further googling will probably turn up more useful sites

ETA the name I was looking for was "Lee Sanella"

I thought of Bernadette Roberts, but I guess I was confusing her for Suzanne Segal!
