Profile privacy was created by nadav
I want to make a note that user profiles are currently public. I can visit this site as a non-logged in user, see under Community Updates that Eric Williams has joined, and visit his profile to see his photo, full birthdate, location, and phone number.

That seems an important oversight, Nadav.

Thank you for pointing that out. I have cleaned things up and profile data is now all restricted, and will be so for all new users as well. If, for some reason, you wish to have some of your data publicly-viewable, you can do so from your profile.

I'd be happy if we stopped asking members for birth dates and phone numbers. Especially phone numbers. There is just no need for them here.

By all means, let's settle on what profile information is desirable. On another site I am building, there is quite a lively debate on this, as well as what profile information is required at registration time, vs. what profile information is optional at registration time, vs. what profile information is collected "eventually". So, we can eliminate stuff easily, and if we agree that optional stuff should not be asked on registration, that is easy too.

To get a discussion started I would argue that we stop collecting:
- gender
- birthdate
- phone number
Everything else except e-mail address and screen name should be optional at registration time and "eventually."
So... let the debate begin!

Oh, I'll just have to disagree violently Chris, what a silly idea!
I'll take it to the supreme court! How dare you suggest such a thing...

I'd like to know how/where else to find people online, *if they care to share it*, so things like email address, skype name, their blog(s), tumblrs, websites etc (that they write), things like that are useful.
It's somewhat useful to know what time zone people are in (city/country) (or perhaps to discover they live in the same city I do).

Phone number seems excessive here, I would agree. We added all the social stuff during an earlier discussion here, so I see no harm in keeping it optional.
Age is probably too much, but location is important for the reasons Ona mentioned. I'll add that "practice years" was kind of dumb on my part since that value will be ever increasing. "Practicing since" makes much more sense.

Chris-- I think you're gonna have a hard time finding disagreement!
