How Meditation Techniques Compare: Studies was created by every3rdthought
As y'all know I'm not a huge fan of the scientific approach, and I don't tend to follow much scientific meditation studies, but I did find this one interesting. They recognise that there are different types of meditation that do different things, and class three basic techniques: 'controlled focus' (e.g. single-pointed on an object), 'open monitoring' (e.g. vipassana) and 'automatic self-transcending' (e.g. just sitting) - though the latter category is taken from TM terminology, which confuses me because I thought TM taught a mantra practice. Anyway, from a quick google this triple classification has been around in the scientific literature for at least a few years, but I only came across it here, so it may be new to some of you too...

That is, however, comparing them in terms of how much they produce a relaxed state or pleasantness? No mention of awakening, or the potential for difficulties that might be triggered if a person 'accidentally' starts having insight...
