Their hypothesis seems plausible, but I would really like to see a well-controlled study. Unfortunately, I think it would be really difficult to pull it off. The changes probably occur very slowly, so the ability to adhere to strict controls for such long periods seems less than probable.
I'd like to think the bulk of the changes really are due to practicing meditation, and that's my guess
But it's cases like these where some of the limits of experimental science become a lot more obvious.
Most of the time we're operating on hunches! And somehow, we get by. Hell, sometimes we even wake up.
