I thought it would be a real neat thing to have a dedicated thread (like random dharma) for bringing in and discussing scientific research concerning meditation. This is it!

To kick it off, one that I find pretty interesting is one from a presentation I saw at ISCS last year where they measured how brain activity responds when you look someone in the eyes.

I don't have a link to show, but I remember it pretty well and it was that when someone looks someone else in the eyes, their brain activity changes from baseline, and then when they look away, there is a certain amount of time it takes to return to baseline brain activity. The interesting contribution of this study was that older meditators, 80 years old and so forth, showed a return time that was faster than 20 year old control groups. This is pretty cool, considering that the return time tends to increase with age, and with the extent someone is depressed. So 80 year old meditators are outperforming people who are in their prime...

Please post anything you find interesting and worthy of discussion or awareness :)

In the interests of readability, especially since many posts will no doubt generate discussion, I would like this to actually use the existing "Science of Awakening" category, and each new "thing" be a separate topic.

Oh yeah hm categories. I always look at the recent posts tab by default so I forgot there are categories like that. I'm not against it though
