Anyone know this book? Listening from the Heart of Silence: Nondual Wisdom and Psychotherapy?

Who knew? (Rabbit hole time).

My husband recommended it, and I read the introduction on his copy and I have to say i was prepared to roll my eyes, but the editor of the collection seems to have a great deal of sense. I was thinking "this is reminding me of Loch Kelly, the clinical psychologist who studied with Adyashanti" and then it turns out Pendergrast (the editor) studied with Adyashanti too, with a similar blend of Tibetan Buddhism, Advaita, Zen, and smatterings of other stuff mixed in. The intended audience is professionals in psychotherapy, not the general public or spiritual seekers.

In the brief intro he covered every basic misconception and pitfall in spiritual seeking, and seems quite sensible and experienced in regards to the ongoing process of integrating insight, as well as the care needed in dealing with awakening in people who are not psychologically stable, as well as pitfalls in the therapist-client relationship, and many other subjects, all of which at that first brief glance he addresses with loads of good sense.

The theme of listening also resonated with the article I posted about a couple days ago, about silence and listening and love.

Anyway, it's on my to-read list.

Haven't read the whole thing but I like what I did read. An interview with Adya comes to mind as particularly good. I met Pendergrast (he teaches or used to teach at my school) and I like him. We had a good conversation on awakening based on a model he was talking about. I actually wrote about it here: haveyouseenmyox.wordpress.com/2013/03/20...-model-of-awakening/

Thanks Eran. That's a nice write up on your blog. The "model" is certainly quite broad, but I agree with the overall pattern he describes. The book looks promising in part because it puts so much emphasis on the life-integration aspects of insight.

Yeah, some models are broader than others but they can still be useful. The emphasis on embodiment and living into one's awakening was important to me at the time and is not really part of most other models I'm aware of.

Eran, I'm flabbergasted. How is it that I've not run across your blog before? I remember reading your posts early on at DHO, and have seen you pop up here and there over the years, but somehow never found the blog.

And, as someone who is also doing a "double major" in meditation and psychoanalysis (as a client), I really appreciate your perspective on things. Thank you for writing. I've got lots of interesting reading ahead of me.

Sheesh... I knew I should have tried to contact you when I was in San Francisco earlier this month.

Thanks Andy! I've been posting papers and other things on that blog for the last couple of years but I rarely cross-post it to any forum. Glad to hear you're enjoying it and please let me know if you're in the Bay Area again!
