Vince has announced a new BG conference, for April in San Francisco, called the "Buddhist Geeks Conference on Contemplative Technology". He is doing this as another Kickstarter (visit to see the intro video):
www.kickstarter.com/projects/vincenthorn...ontemplative-technol
So, the big question is: if you went in previous years, would you go to this one? And if you have never gone, would you go? This conference, unlike others, is more focused and is not a general "Buddhist Geeks" conference. The focus is on technology as it relates to contemplative practice, and contemplative practice as it relates to technology. Interesting, for sure (at least to me) but the risk, of course, is that by focusing a conference that had somewhere shy of 300 attendees, will that be too focused to fly?
Personally, I am on the fence. I have always had far more value from the out-of-conference conference than the specific sessions themselves, and worry that it won't draw enough people to get my fix. Cost (financial and temporal) is always an issue, otherwise it would be a no-brainer. But the venue is a whole lot easier to get to for me, and the flight would be cheaper. It doesn't help that the lineup is still very nebulous, and I can think of at least one speaker that makes me shake my head and go "huh?".
I would love to hear other opinions.

Whether these things are "worth it" always depends exactly on what you want from it. Typically when I go to similar events I want to meet people I know and hang out, really, more than anything. Secondly I usually want to see the location (ie it's in Boulder, and I've always wanted to check out Boulder, or I have other friends there to see). I rarely find that anyone on any subject gives a conference talk that isn't covered in more detail and more skillfully in whatever books they've written. If there are panels or moderated conversations, those can be interesting. If there may be a chance to have a private conversation with an author, speaker, teacher you really like, that can be amazing and worth the whole trip.
But that's just what I want from conferences, so not necessarily applicable to anyone else.

I am thinking that I might sit this one out as long as there is a 'regular' conference in August again. Any word on that? I love San Fran though. I guess the only way I would go is if I knew that most of our group were going again. Like Tom said, the best part of the conference is hanging with all of you guys. If y'all aren't going then, it isn't worth it to me.

I get no sparks from the subject matter whatsoever. I wouldn't go even if it was close. I'm w/Russell on San Fran--love it.

I'm not especially interested in the topic, especially not without knowing the lineup. Would love to visit SF, but there's a good chance I'll be moving some time early 2014 so it won't likely work financially.

I won't go to the SF version in April but will go if there is a general BG conference again next year. If Vince kills the general conference I think it is a mistake, but maybe he knows something I don't. I think I'll e-mail him and ask about the grand plan.

I would actually like to go, but I'm afraid my husband would erupt if I even brought it up. We're still paying off the last one. Sigh.

Just heard from Vincent Horn after sending him an e-mail about the continuation of the more general BG conferences. The idea is not to drop these "all hands" meetings. It is, in fact, their plan to do one next October in Boulder.

The list of speakers got updated to include Charles Tart and Kenneth Folk. Also the two keynote speakers were revealed: Jack Kornfield and Douglas Rushkoff (ps. if you haven't listened to Vince's interview with Rushkoff, it's pretty good!). The keynote speakers were added as stretch goals at $25k (jack) and $30k (Rushkoff).

Holy buckets, that sounds wonderful! I have a feeling they'll have no trouble filling it up now. Too bad I blew all my disposable income on BG13. Meaning, I 'me not regretting having gone (far from it!) but wishing I had more money
like everyone else in the universe, I guess!

I'm re-thinking my participation in this April event. One, it's in San Francisco, my favorite city in the US. Two, it's easy for me to get there by making up a work related reason to go to SF. Three, it's shaping up to have better agenda than I thought it would. Four, I want to support Vince and Buddhist Geeks, and five, it's in San Francisco, my favorite city in the US.

Got me rethinking too. I want to go to both, but $$$!!! If we go, does anyone want to go have a sit in the Muir woods one day. I swear that is the most magical places I have ever been.

I just helped fund the event by donating to it on Kickstarter. If you plan to go please do that. BG needs the money.

If we go, I also propose a road trip to visit our honourable member of Petaluma!

I have hesitated to chime in out of uncertainty about my whereabouts in April; but my plans are morphing, lately, as I review timing, what I meant to accomplish by moving, what size of increments of change are manageable...
And I have to say that the prospect of Charlie Tart speaking is alluring enough to hook me. He truly transcends several genres, to my eye.

Here's the message from Vince for those who are not on the kickstarter campaign:
Dear Buddhist Geeks,
We recently launched the Buddhist Geeks Conference on Contemplative Technology as a kickstarter campaign. We decided to launch it via kickstarter to see if there was enough interest to produce the event itself--an experiment of sorts. Throughout this process, the team at Buddhist Geeks has been holding space for the unknown--Should we plan a themed BG Conference? Will the geeks ‘geek-out’ on contemplative technology? Is this topic too narrow?
Early on in the kickstarter campaign we realized there wasn’t enough interest at this time to pursue the event. For this reason, we have decided to cancel the kickstarter campaign and to focus 100% on producing an even better Buddhist Geeks Conference experience in Boulder, Colorado (#bgeeks14). We’ll be holding the Buddhist Geeks Conference, October 16 - 19, 2014 in Boulder, Colorado.
We’re very excited to be turning our focus to the BG Conference in Boulder and we can’t wait to see you there for our annual gathering of the geeks! Stay tuned as we will be pre-selling tickets to the BG Conference in Boulder next month.
In service,
The Buddhist Geeks Crew
