Watching a quite good documentary on the subject called "Flight from Death":

It's I think a fair and often insightful look at the way we strive to find immortality and fight the knowledge that we will die, and how that results in everything from religious to fashion to war...
(PS - includes discussion of studies done on how people react to scenarios after they've been reminded of their death (or not). So it's sort of anthropology/sociology oriented.)
