Drunken zen poetry was created by Ona Kiser
My husband likes to read something before we meditate, and today he found an unread book in a box in the basement: "One Robe, One Bowl: The Zen Poetry of Ryokan" Nice! I opened it at random to read something. It was short and evocative, describing a path in the forest, moss, falling leaves. Pleasant enough. It was only a few lines, so I flipped a few pages and read another. More moss and leaves, snow... and then "I walk to get some village saké; after drinking too much, I write these verses."
Okay. Flipped around again.
Bamboo groves, sparrows singing, etc. "I meet the old farmer returning to his home; He greets me like a long-lost friend. At his cottage the farmer's wife heats saké while we eat freshly picked vegetables and chat. Together, gloriously drunk, we no longer know the meaning of unhappiness."
It went on like that for a while, gentle scenery and drunkenness. I thought it was pretty darn funny. Not what we were expecting.

Another way to end suffering, at least temporarily
