Gary Shandling on Marc Maron podcast

Yes, I liked it very much. I felt a little bad for Marc because there was a lot that Shandling was saying that was just really straight dharma, and Marc obviously didn't catch the reference. Which is not to say that he didn't understand what he was saying, but there was a lot of points where Shandling was basically having a straight forward conversation about Buddhism, and Marc missed that side of things.

wow.... listened to the first half so far, and very funny, and touching in a subtle way. I like these two guys, they are having an interesting conversation. I'll comment more after finishing it on my way to work in tomorrow.

ahh I really liked it. I actually enjoyed the way Gary was so nonchalant in how he addressed some deep stuff, and it was interesting to me how Marc received it-- very openly, sensing that there might be something really profound there, but almost skirting around the edges of it.

Gary was just talking about his understanding of life, not a philosophy, and Marc could respond to it because it was so human. That's really the beauty of dharma to me, that it's like common sense and basic facts about experience and life that we all "know" on some level-- impermanence, interdependant arising, spontaneity vs. inauthenticity, stuff that is immediately recognizable to anyone of more or less adult maturity.

The difference is that one actually follows that thread, deeper and deeper into the spiral, and loses more and more complexities and disturbances by going right into it. I get the feel from Gary that he's gone fairly deeply into it, but the way he expresses it is so down to earth and simple. And funny! Although listening to it in the car with my two and a half year old meant keeping my finger on the volume nob to censor out the profanity! hahaha
