Time, time, time

Time, time, time was created by Ona Kiser
Remember how we've talked about there being no past or future, only now? Is it possible there's somehow not even now? I had the strangest experience meditating last night. Mostly I was just sitting, nothing interesting to report, but several times I wandered off thinking about something and then just reminded myself to pay attention to "now" and that settled me back in the moment, which was otherwise very boundless, silent and still. But maybe halfway through the sit I gave myself that gentle reminder and there was this sort of shockwave (that kind of ripple of mental/physical energy that can accompany insights sometimes) and I thought with a shock "there's not even now!" and it seemed to resonate really deeply. I continued sitting, and things continued more or less as before, perhaps deeper, but later I thought that's a very strange thing to think, but it really seemed for a moment like even the idea of now is about having an idea of time, and there's no time at all. Am I off my rocker?

Nope, you are not off your rocker. Two realizations from my own practice are similar:

1. Now cannot be held, period. The "now" people talk about is a practical proxy for the experiences they're having within narrow band

2. Time is a construct of mind. It's constructed by mind to allow us to experience change.

You had the second realization, yes?

What I jotted in my journal after was: "there is no time. not even now." The second I had had before, I think (referenced in another thread) where I realized that past and future don't really exist, because we only experience now. This felt more like the way you describe #1, but hard to say, because things were fairly indescribable for a few moments.

Well, at least I'm not insane, either way.

Why is there always that weird rush of energy when you have realizations like that?

I have no idea about the energy rush. None.

There is a similar realization about space -- just so you know it's coming ;-)

"now" implies a static thing while life seems to be a movement. Now is perhaps just a theory, a way to label an event or activity that isn't quite before (memory) and not exactly after (imagination).

As I ponder this wonderful thing I keep thinking of what I've been told about molecules and atoms - they are always moving, changing, right? Stasis itself might just be a theory.

BTW (not to complicate things, but...) if time is a construct then saying things like "there is no past and no future" become a bit nonsensical. Experience is experience, whatever sense it's based on - sight, hearing, touch, mind (memory), mind (imagination).

And you know, the theme song just kicks off in my brain, as soon as I hear those words....
